Veterinarians Provide TLC For All Animals

Veterinarians are physicians that take care of pets, livestock, and animals in zoos, racetracks, and laboratories, among many others. Mycoplasma, An Incurable Disease Affecting Pet Rats

Mycoplasma is a very common rat disease and almost all rats have it. The most visible symptoms are sneezing and wheezing. If left on its own for long enough, the disease also causes gasping for air. Mycoplasma is also called mycoplasmosis . It is an incurable respiratory disease that easily spreads from rat to rat but never from rat to people. It can move from an infected pet to another pet through direct contact, via the air, or through an owner touching an infected pet and then proceeding to touch a healthy, uninfected pet. Deficiencies in vitamin A and E can increase the severity of the symptoms, so do repeated exposure to cigarette smoke and ammonia accumulated in the cage from rat's urine.
Mycoplasma causes blisters on the surface of a rat's lungs. Left untreated, it can also cause lung abscesses, emphysema, and uterus infection for female rats. Besides the sneezing, rats that have the disease usually looks fine. They eat well and show nothing wrong during their activities as if they are completely healthy. However, when the disease reaches an advanced stage, they begin to show signs that all is not well.
To slow down, or halt the progress of the disease, antibiotics are required. The usual antibiotics used are doxycycline, erythromycin, tylosin, baytril, and sometimes, although it's less preferred by many pet rat owners, tetracycline. You can tell if the treatment is successful when your pets stop sneezing. For infected pets where the disease is already in a very advance stage, it is best to seek the help of a veterinarian. They can help you combat the disease and stop its advance.
According to some owners, the antibiotic tylosin can completely cure a pet rat suffering from mycoplasma if the infected pet is still under 10 months old. So far, this report has not been properly documented yet. It is worth a try however, just to see if it really works. If it doesn't eradicate the disease from the rat's system, at least tylosin might be able to stop it's spread to stop the symptoms that may be bothering your pet.
Mycoplasma to rats is like the common cold to people. It spreads easily like a cold, and it is also incurable. The symptoms however can be treated. It is best to give rats some antibiotic the moment you notice them sneezing more than usual. This way, you prevent the disease from going into a more advance state and causing more damage to your pet rats.

Gingivitis in Dogs - Does Your Dog Have Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum causing them to become red and swollen, this condition is mostly caused by the buildup of plaque. Plaque is the result of when bacteria which is normally found in the mouth mixes with starches and proteins from the saliva, plaque is very gritty in nature and sticks to the teeth. This plaque later on tends to become tartar which accumulates near the gum line.
If gingivitis is left untreated it can lead to tooth. So how do you know if your dog has gingivitis? Well, the most visible sign is the redness of the gums and the swelling. Thereafter you will need to take your dog to the vet who will carry out diagnostic tests in order to pin down exactly what's happening. The vet may need to use some sort of sedation or anesthesia to carry out a thorough examination.

Apart from brushing your dog's teeth you may want to introduce him to some chews or bones which are very effective in stopping plaque build up and can also aid in the exercise of jaw muscles.

How to Prevent Marek's Disease in Chickens

Marek's Disease is an extremely contagious viral disease in chickens. People have been studying this poultry disease extensively as it is related to the research on cancer in various species, including humans. When the vaccine for this dangerous disease was produced, it marked the first step towards anti-cancer vaccine effective for any animal species.
Different viruses can cause this disease. The most common one is visceral and affects the eye nerves of chickens.
Limb paralysis is another extremely common symptom of Marek's Disease. The most common manifestations include slight to severe paralysis of the legs, wings, or neck. The outcome is fatal with death occurring due to the chicken's inability to procure water and food. An inborn immunity called 'age resistance' automatically develops in the chicks within five months of their birth. Hence, it is imperative that the chicks are raised away from the affected chickens. Some older chickens that still survive after being infected with Marek's Disease can remain carriers. Chickens from other flocks might also bring the disease with them. Birds generally get affected between the age of five to twenty-five weeks.
However, the disease might affect chickens even after the age of twenty-five weeks if the birds have been under considerable stress. Birds that are a couple of years old might also get affected with another similar disease known as 'Lymphoid Leukosis'. Current Situation of the Avian Flu

Avian Influenza is known to affect especially wild and domestic birds as well as pigs but rare cases of human infection are updated. Since 2004 though, more than 200 confirmed cases of the avian virus in humans have been detected and analyzed by the World Health Organization. The infection with the A influenza virus is thought to have been done by direct contact with sick birds or their secretions. Scientists are still searching for the method how low and highly pathogenic viral strains might affect humans.
Health organizations all over the world continuously monitor human cases of avian flu outbreaks although no actual man to man transmission of the disease has been registered. The bird flu virus represents a real danger for humans as it is able to perform mutations by combining with human types of Influenza; this would lead to disastrous epidemics if the disease could spread between humans.
The first cases of bird to human transmission occurred in Hong Kong in 1997 resulting in 6 deaths after 18 persons have been infected. About 1.5 million birds have been destroyed to annihilate the infection source. The H5N1 type of influenza showed no direct transmission from human to human.
In 1999 in China two more cases of infection were noted when two children became ill though the real source has not been discovered. Both patients recovered after the infection with the low pathogenic virus H9N2.
In the State of Virginia in 2002 one person showed serological marks of infection, after poultry farm was contaminated with the H7N2.
Another situation of H5N1 infestation occurred in 2003 in Hong Kong when two members of one family became ill and one of them died. They are believed to have contacted the virus during a visit in China but the exact source has not been established. A second family member died of a respiratory condition but no further testing was made.
2003 in Netherlands, several cases of infection appeared in some poultry farms; pigs and humans were also involved in the disease. 89 workers got infected With H7N7 and showed symptoms of fever, muscle aches, conjunctivitis and cough. One person died of respiratory distress syndrome and complications.
In 2003 one child was found to suffer from the low pathogenic H9N2 in Hong Kong but he recovered completely. The same year in New York a patient with respiratory symptoms was detected after tests to suffer from H7N2 and he safely recovered in a few weeks.
In 2004 in Canada the H7N3 virus type infected a few poultry workers in a farm epidemics but all showed easy eye infections. H5N1 occurred in 2004 in Vietnam and Thailand when a possible human to human transmission appeared. Further cases of human infestation with H5N1 occurred in Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Egypt, Iraq and Turkey in 2005 after human contact with sick dead swans. In the same countries several other cases appeared in 2006.

The report states: Most FDA-approved cancer biomarkers are glycoproteins, but little is known about how their glycan structures are altered in cancer where diagnostic performance could be greatly improved. This experimental data is available at MIT.
The purpose for the study was to attract special scientists to exploit fundamental aspects of cancer biology; and, to establish a core of integrated glycobiologists to facilitate the development of cancer glycobiology for presentation and diagnostic applications.
One point in the report said that incentives are needed to attract the leading glycobiologist experts to do cancer research with defined clinical goals. The problem, according to the report, is that traditional funding mechanisms are not suited for an emerging field.
The Mission of the NIH/NCI study was to elucidate the structure and function of glycans that contribute to oncogenesis. And, to exploit aberrant glycosylation in cancer for the development of translational applications for cancer prevention, detection, and diagnosis.
This influx of talent is a game changer for fighting cancer. The best and brightest are coming to Texas and Houston. These established researchers are adding enormous talent to Baylor College of Medicine, Methodist Research Institute, Rice University, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas - Austin, San Antonio and Southwestern Medical Center.
Houston is the Medical Capitol of the world and MD Anderson is the leading cancer treatment center. A few years ago an oncologist at MD Anderson explained to me that a doctor friend in Boston told him that glycomics was the future of medicine. Glycoproteins are now proven to be the bull's eye, the Rosetta Stone, of medicine and of all healthcare. Everything points to accelerated and expanded glycoprotein research, and rightfully so.
According to the NIH/NCI study, glycoproteins are good for diagnosing, monitoring, proving, reproving, developing billions of dollars in drugs, testing, and researching until the cows come home. Perhaps in another, always another, ten to twenty years, we will have a cancer cure.
Measuring the quality and quantity of glycoproteins on the cell surface is an excellent diagnostic approach because the lower the glycoprotein count, the greater the cancer risk. General Information Regarding Avian Influenza (Bird Flu)

The World Health Organization (WHO) makes reports and updates regarding new human cases of infection with bird flu. The only subtype that can cause severe illness to people is Influenza A /H5N1 virus, initially it affects chickens, ducks and other birds by the process of mutation they can become highly pathogenic. Because highly pathogenic viruses can survive for long periods in tissue, water and in the environment.
Especially when temperatures are low is transmitted very easily in chickens and other birds through direct contact with feces and secretions from infected birds, eggs, feed, water, cages equipment, vehicles and clothing. Public health authorities monitor human illnesses associated with avian influenza. In Hong-Kong occurred for the first time infection both in humans and poultry and were killed about 1.5 million chickens.
Human infections with H5N1 occurred as a result of contact with infected poultry and with infected death swangs. Some persons have been infected with H5N1 as result of consuming uncooked duck blood. China two cases of patogenic infections with avian influenza A (H5N1) have been confirmed in a family. After which in pigs and people, 90 people were confrmed with bird flu virus H7N7 in association with cases of eye conjunctivitis ,one death occurred at a veterinarian with acute respiratory distress syndrome and other complications after having direct contact with infected poultry.
In New York, 2003 there has been registered one case a patient with respiratory symptoms which recovered in few weeks and tests confirmed it had been avian influenza A (H7N2) virus. Signs and symptoms of bird flu in humans are similar to other influenza viruses: sore throat and cough, fever, muscle weakness and/or pain, eye infections, with life-threatening complications such as: severe viral pneumonia, respiratory distress syndrome, multi- organ failure.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration suggests the following antiviral agents supposed to prevent and treat avian influenza: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir, and zanamivir. They may be not always effective it has been demonstrated that viruses are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. Clostridium In Dogs - Symptoms and Treatment

The genus Clostridium is a group of anaerobic bacteria (they can thrive in conditions where oxygen is not present) which have been linked to several important diseases in dogs. Two of the most common clostridial infections in dogs are caused by Clostridium perfringens and Clostridium difficile.
Some healthy dogs have been found to harbor C. difficile in their gastrointestinal tract without suffering any infection. However antibiotic treatment can create a favorable environment for this bacterium to increase in number and cause a condition called pseudomembranous colitis, a serious local infection affecting the colon.
Clostridium perfringens is also considered a normal bacterial flora of the gastrointestinal tract. However when conditions are favorable for their multiplication and colonization, the infectious agent can cause Clostridial enterotoxicosis, an abnormal condition of the intestinal tract which is manifested by diarrhea and abdominal pain. Vomiting and fever may also be present. There are certain types of Clostridium perfringens that produce toxins and have been linked to food poisoning in dogs. These are bacteria which are acquired when dogs eat poorly cooked meat or poultry.
Most dogs suffering from food poisoning often recover from the gastrointestinal symptoms after a day or two without any serious complications. However, there are those that develop into clostridial necrotizing enteritis, an infection which may be fatal for dogs.
There are several predisposing factors that may pave the way for proliferation and colonization of Clostridium perfringens which includes a sudden change in diet, deficient antibodies, high intestinal pH, exposure to sick dogs in a kennel or hospital, and concurrent conditions affecting the digestive system such as gastroenteritis, parvovirus, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Diagnosis of Clostridial infections in dogs is based on a complete history and thorough physical exam. Your veterinarian may also recommend specific diagnostic tests such as complete blood count, urinalysis, and biochemical blood profile. Microscopic analysis of a fecal sample is also indicated. An endoscope can be used to get a clear view of the condition of the dog's intestines and also to get tissue samples for further examination and bacterial culture.
The latest state of the art diagnostic tool for Clostridium perfringens infection is an immunologic test which can identify the presence of the bacterial toxin in the fecal sample. The test is made more accurate when combined with the PCR testing to detect the Clostridial gene which has been linked to enterotoxin production.
Clostridium infection in dogs can be treated with a round of antibiotics which can be given orally for several weeks. Some of the most common antibiotics of choice include metronidazole, ampicillin, tylosin, amoxicillin, and tylosin.
Being able to diagnose the early signs and symptoms that your dog will develop before that a minor health issue become a major one is a skill that every dog owner should learn.

Aflatoxin Exposure: Reason for Concern?

What are aflatoxins? Let's consult Wikipedia for a thorough commentary on the topic. "Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins that are produced by many species of Aspergillus, a fungus." They are toxic and "among the most carcinogenic substances known."
Alright, my fingers are out of my ears. You had me at carcinogenic. Enlighten me, Wikipedia. Where are these fungus friends found? Or more to the point, how in the world do I avoid them?
"Aflatoxin-producing members of Aspergillus are common and widespread in nature." It appears they can contaminate grains before harvest or during storage and naturally reside in soil and decaying plants. It can, however, invade all types of organic matter when conditions are ideal for its growth, ie moist and warm.
As it relates to food, aflatoxins tend to contaminate some foods more than others. Peanuts, as I mentioned earlier, are a biggy. Peanuts tend to provide favorable conditions for aflatoxin production both during growth and storage (Interestingly, Valencia peanuts seem to be the one variety resistant to mold growth.). Other foods/products include cooking oils, cassava, corn, cotton seed, millet, rice, sunflower seeds, tree nuts, sorghum, wheat and various spices. Aflatoxin-related compounds have even been found in the products of animals who fed on contaminated grains (think eggs, milk, meat).
But rest assured folks. It isn't all doom and gloom. We have the FDA, right? Our protector of the food supply surely has knocked this vile microbe out of the food supply. Well, sorta. Like most things harmful to our natural body processes, the FDA has set maximum levels for ingestion. Basically, we can't reasonably eliminate it without major economic consequences, but we can keep it to a minimum. Not exactly reassuring, but OK. The thing is you can still eat a considerable amount of aflatoxin-laden foods if you aren't eating a varied diet or simply, by some cruel coincidence, happen to love a wide variety of foods that support aflatoxin production exceedingly well.
This then begs the question, what exactly does happen with aflatoxin ingestion? Wiki wiki, what say you?
"High level aflatoxin exposure produces an acute hepatic necrosis, resulting later in cirrhosis, and/or carcinoma of the liver." So in other words, it's possible your liver will slowly stop working and die. Or get cancer. Maybe both. Seriously?
The good news? "Adult humans have a high tolerance for aflatoxin exposure and rarely succumb to acute aflatoxicosis." Succumb? You mean die? Well that's good, but still, I'd prefer to avoid exposure altogether if possible and avoid that gray area between sick and succumb.

Newcastle Disease or Ranikhet Disease (RD)

Newcastle disease or Ranikhet disease (RD) is the most common, the most widely prevalent, and economically the most important viral disease of poultry. It is a very severe, sudden, and rapidly spreading disease; and may be seen from 6th to 7th day onward up to 72 weeks. It occurs throughout the year, but is most common in the summer.
Cause
A virus called paramyxovirus. These viruses are of different types. Some are highly powerful and cause most severe form of the disease, others are moderate, while a certain group is only mildly harmful. In addition, there are some viruses that cause infection without showing any symptoms.
Spread
1. Virus spreads through the air.
2. Infection occurs mainly through inhalation or ingestion.
3. Contaminated feed and water spread infection.
4. Movements of people and equipment also spread infection.
5. Away from the bird, that is, in the shed, virus survives for days to weeks. However, in the dead bird or faeces, virus survives for several months.
Symptoms
Depending on the disease-producing power of the virus, symptoms vary.
1. With very harmful viruses, first indication is sudden death. Then, symptoms such as depression, weakness, lying down, green diarrhoea, swelling of the face, and nervous signs may appear, ending in exhaustion and death. Other signs include twisting of the neck, paralysis of legs and arched position of the body.
Mortality may occur up to 100% in chicks. In layers, early symptom is shell-less or soft-shelled eggs, followed by complete stoppage of laying.
2. Moderately harmful viruses usually cause severe respiratory disease and respiratory symptoms. In adult birds there is marked drop in egg production for several months. Mortality is low.
3. Mildly harmful viruses may cause no disease, or only a mild respiratory distress.
Postmortem Findings
1. Pinpoint haemorrhages on the tips of glands in the proventriculus.
2. Enlarged and haemorrhagic caecal tonsils.

5. Warm Organ Perfusion Device: A better system for the transport of a variety of living organs is being developed. After harvesting an organ, donor blood is circulated through the heart-lung pump to the living organ. The donor blood is heated and oxygenated, and the organ is transplanted in a pre-oxygenated state. This warm organ perfusion device will significantly increase the transplant time period.
6. Laparo Endoscopic Single-site Surgery (LESS): This is laparoscopic surgery performed through a single incision in a patient's navel. LESS may reduce complications that may take place after open or laparoscopic abdominal surgery. The patient's pain levels are considerably diminished and the recovery period is reduced.
7. Diaphragm Pacing System: This system has the potential to help patients unable to maintain adequate ventilation due to a diaphragmatic malfunction. Diaphragmatic pacing is performed using a collection of electrodes connected to the phrenic nerves on the diaphragm. This innovative technology will drastically reduce the catastrophic effects of extended respiratory pump failure and mechanical ventilation.

Diagnosing and Preventing Mareks Disease in Chickens

If you own chickens, you should be aware of a very common illness called MAREKS DISEASE (MD) that many chickens have.
What is Mareks Disease? It is a virus that causes tumors to grow on the internal organs of chickens and this disease kills more chickens than any other disease. It caused widespread and devastating losses of poultry in years past.
Mareks disease is a very common disease in chicken flocks that is highly contagious. Chicks between the ages of five to twenty four weeks of age are most susceptible to contracting this disease.
Mareks Disease is grouped with the herpesvirus category of viruses. This disease is also commonly referred to as 'Range Paralysis'. Your chickens can catch this disease even they have not been in direct contact with infected birds or people who have touched diseased birds. Birds that are not killed by the tumors this virus causes are lifetime carries. They shed the virus through feather dander that becomes airborne.
Mareks Disease has been very exciting to researchers because it is used to study cancer in all species, including people. Researchers were actually able to create the very first vaccine for any species that was effective to prevent cancer.
This disease is highly contagious and the only way to prevent tumors from growing when your chickens are infected is to vaccinate your birds against this disease. The vaccine doesn't get rid of the disease but it greatly reduces the fatality of the disease and it is much less likely to spread among your flock and others in the area.
The vaccine must be given to day old chicks as close to hatching as possible. Once your chicks are more than twenty four hours old, the vaccine is no longer effective and shouldn't be given. Chicks will become immune within two weeks of being vaccinated. The vaccine has to be given very quickly as it isn't effective after about 30 minutes or so.

Your Health as Related to Your Complex Environment

The first segment of this article deals with the vulnerability, through the lack of knowledge, of the individual in dealing with his or her health. The second segment discusses some of the special means available, through the use of technology, to far better deal with the environment as it relates to human health.

The disease area is where our present health care system primarily operates. In fact, the present health care system is often referred to as a disease-oriented medical system. We hear a lot about this area, because this is where most research and other medical activities take place, not up in this pre-disease stage area, or for sure not up in the normal-plus area.
(Although I am using only one line here (in handout A) for discussion, and simplification, purposes, the use of a number of lines, possibly representing major body systems, may in fact provide a more realistic representation).
We are told that major diseases such as most cancer, heart problems and the like usually take years to materialize, yet how often is someone given a complete physical examination and a clean bill of health, only to come down with the symptoms of one of these diseases within weeks? Obviously, the person was not likely in good health at the time of the examination; he or she was in reality down in this disease area, or pre-disease stage area, not up here, and for sure not up here in the normal plus area.
 The hundreds of health level conditions from the disease level up through the normal plus level would be fully established by this system. Currently you are diagnosed to have some level of diseased, or with the absence of that diagnosis, considered to be normal and sent home. What about the hundreds of subtle conditions in between--for example such as your system being slightly out of balance with minor corrections required?.
Unfortunately, at this time, the way we usually become aware that we are not normal is when we develop the physical symptoms of a disease or from the results of a lab test. Instead of being up in the normal area, we are sadly down in the disease area or close to it. We often go from what we consider to be a condition of good health to abruptly finding out we have a disease, sometimes a very serious one, often causing a major change in our life, to often with no warning or opportunity for any form of intervention to prevent it. We then can only hope that the disease is curable or at least treatable.
The proposed system, would not only provide you far more knowledge about your true level of health, but in addition, and just as critical, usually how you could have far more control over that level of wellness. The contrast between the current health care situation and what the system being proposed here could provide in terms of preventive and wellness knowledge might be compared to someone just feeling around in the dark, and then having someone come along and turn on the lights.
